Passing on his love for the School
Howie Grant ’75 always intended to support TCS in the future, and he made sure of it 35 years ago. That’s when he decided to make the School a beneficiary of his life insurance policy.
“TCS was a great influence on my life. In the past I’ve made the occasional modest gift to the School, but I wanted to make sure that there would be something more significant coming later. This seemed like the way to do it.”
Howie describes his bond to the School as “incredibly strong.” As a child he had heard stories from his godfather, Eldon McQuaig “Hubie” Sinclair ’46, about his time at the School as head boy. Howie decided that this was where he wanted to be, and when he finally got here in 1971, TCS did not disappoint.
“I adored it. I learned life lessons and made lifelong friends. I had opportunities to meet people from all over the world, I found out so much about myself.”
A full life
Howie lists TCS as one of the four most important experiences in his life. The others are (in no particular order): four summers working on the TransCanada pipeline; three years in the British army; and marrying his wife, Tracey, whose strength inspires him.
He has lived and worked in three countries – Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. He was a multi-unit franchisee for Domino’s Pizza for 27 years and today he is far from retired. He recently launched a new start-up, related to his enjoyment of chemistry at TCS. It will market his invention of an anti-microbial solution to prevent diseases, pathogens and illnesses affecting agricultures and livestock.
A milestone moment
Taking the decision to make a legacy gift was a milestone moment for Howie. “I felt like I’d accomplished something that I’d wanted to do since I was a boy – I’d always wanted to make a significant contribution to support a place I loved very much.”
He wants his future gift to go towards what the School will deem important at the time of receiving it. “The ultimate aim is to help students in the future to enjoy the School in the way I was able to.”
And Howie has a message of encouragement for his fellow alumni. “If this is something you’re considering, I’d encourage you to reflect on the value of how much you were given, of what you were taught. It’s a personal choice, but it is a great way to make an impact on the lives of TCS students of the future.”
