A legacy gift to close the circle
“It was as if a new world opened before my eyes.”
That’s how Ted Boyd ’82 describes feeling when he arrived at Trinity College School in the fall of 1977, from North Bay, Ontario. None of his family had attended TCS, but the local Anglican minister was an alumnus. He thought Ted might be a good fit for the School and suggested he apply.
Ted wrote the entrance exams and was offered a bursary. He soon found himself in a dorm with 11 other 14-year-old boys.
“I had to step out of my comfort zone quickly. The School wanted us to be engaged, they wanted us to collaborate with our peers, with the community, and the world. A sense of community was ingrained in me very quickly. It was life-changing.”
The friendships that Ted began back then turned out to have depth and longevity. He talks regularly to many of his classmates, sometimes weekly, and feels fortunate and enriched to still have those relationships.
Ted thinks it’s important for him to give back because of what the School provided him. He has tried to stay actively engaged with it in as many ways as he can. He served on the TCS Board of Governors for six years and is now a trustee. He has been a donor for 25 years.
Purpose and service
An entrepreneur by day, through the years Ted has found volunteer work in non-profits fulfilling, and he feels that the impetus for this came from his time at TCS. “A life of purpose and service seemed true back then, even if it wasn’t formally articulated as part of the School’s mission statement [as it is today].”
Ted’s wife and daughters are supportive of his passion for the School. When Monique and Ted attended the 150th anniversary of the School she was impressed by what she saw in the documentary made for the occasion – The Story of Trinity: 150 years and beyond.
So, she wasn’t surprised when Ted came home from lunch with a fellow alumnus to tell her that he was going to make a gift in his will to the School.
“This individual was also a passionate supporter of the School,” Ted says. “He asked me if I would consider making a bequest to TCS and I knew right away that I wanted to do it. I revised my will the next day!”
He adds, “Thinking back, I don’t think I would have been able to attend the School without a bursary. So, making this kind of gift closes the circle for me. It feels like a natural extension to the TCS community I’ve been fortunate to experience over a lifetime.”
